“Die Wohnung” läuft in Berlin nur in einigen wenigen Programmkinos, z.B. im grossartigen Kino Krokodil in Prenzlberg, das sich auf Filme aus Russland und Osteuropa spezialisiert hat.

“The Flat” is a great documentary about a chapter of Berlin history that unwinds in Israel. For 70 years, Gerda and Kurt Tuchler lived in the same apartment in Tel Aviv. The couple moved there after their escape from Nazi Germany in 1933. In exile, the two held on to their Germany identity and tried to conserve their Berlin lifestyle and all the elements associated with it as best as they could.
When Gerda dies aged 98, the family comes together to clear out the flat. Among countless letters, photos and documents, they find traces of a past unknown to the family members: Their Jewish grandparents were close friends of the family of Leopold von Mildenstein, an SS officer.
Arnon Goldfinger, Gerda’s grandson, starts investigating the background of this curious friendship and uncovers a fascinating family history that had been kept under lock and key for nearly seven decades. Goldfinger raises the questions that his mother has never asked and that, by consequence, his grandparents never had to answer. When he travels to Germany to meet the daughter of the von Mildensteins, he sees himself confronted with pretty much identical taboos on the side of her family. As the story unfolds, the film examines the reactions of both families to Goldfinger’s revelations – and shows how complex the relationship between the second and the third postwar generation in both Germany and Israel continues to be.
“The Flat” is currently running in a handful of theatres in Berlin, unfortunately only in the German version (“Die Wohnung”). I would recommend to watch it at Kino Krokodil, a lovely small cinema in Prenzlauer Berg focused on Russian and Eastern European film productions.
